About HexGL
HexGL is a futuristic racing game built entirely in WebGL, and at the time of its release it was a headline answer to the question "can a browser really do 3D?". You pilot a hover-craft through a neon canyon at absurd speed, banking through gates and scraping the walls when you misjudge a turn. It wears its WipEout inspiration on its sleeve and does not apologize for it.
What makes HexGL worth playing today is not just nostalgia for the early-WebGL era — it still moves. The sense of speed, the bloom on the track edges, the audio that swells as you boost, all hold up. It is also a genuinely open project: the full source lives on GitHub, which makes it a favorite starting point for anyone learning real-time web graphics. Short, flashy, free, and a useful reference for what the platform can do when pushed.
How to Play
Use the arrow keys or WASD to steer. Up accelerates, left and right steer, down brakes. Space activates your boost once charged. The track is a series of gates — pass through them to stay on course and maintain your speed bonus.
Strategy: do not oversteer. The craft carries momentum, so small smooth inputs beat large corrections. Save your boost for the long straights where it has room to compound, not the corners. Brake early into tight turns rather than mid-corner — you lose less speed. Completing a clean lap is faster than a risky one.
